Spore
You heard that Spore is actually five games? And the first four are just a really long pre-game? With ongoing tutorial? Believe it. And the controls change between stages. Heck, between Creature and Tribe they reverse. Talk about confusing. Sigh.

I persevered up to the end of Tribe, but haven't had the drive to try Civilization yet (which, I am told and believe, really is Civilization, in small.)

Oh, and the first three stages don't really last long enough. I don't expect the fourth to last long enough, either.

My son is still enjoying it, but me... I just don't know.

Mac is playing it, and I was surprised about how fast it went. I'm glad I didn't fork over money for myself to have a copy.

I have seen a few commercials for it. But they didn't do much for it; like they didn't tell me anything about what the game is or about. Your write-up told me a heck of a lot more about it. I think the commercial was saying something about downloading it for free? Did I mishear that or is that just downloading the first part?

I might look up more info about it but from what you say I would probably pass on it.

I can't remember if it was Penny Arcade or Zero Punctuation that pointed out it was five different games rolled into one, which would make a quick sound bite for a commercial difficult.

If you really like designing things, it's got it's high points. But the actual game play is quickly exhausted.

I became a little bored after going through the first few stages rather quickly. You are right about the changing of controls being wonky and in the space stage I either can't find the controls for easy travel between different solar systems or they just aren't there, which makes establishing and supporting multiple colonies of different planets a very long and tedious task.

Overall, I wasn't greatly impressed and now after reading ladyniniane's comment I should probably go check my system for that rootkit....

So... you are saying I probably don't really want to even try the Civ level, much less the Space level?

I think if you let your son finish the civ level, then it will let you start a new game in the space level, then give it a shot and if the odd controls don't annoy you too much, you might enjoy it.

I guess I should also disclose that obviously the species creation tool is a big part of what makes the game "fun", but that gimmick wore off on me after creating 2 or 3 species, so maybe that is another thing that wore me out of the game early.
