Well, I'll be darned.
I needed to get some labels off the handle of a hammer. I soaked them in soapy water, but that only got the paper part off - the gummy part stayed. So I tried isopropyl alcohol, but that didn't do much. So I tried acetone (finger nail polish remover) and that did a bit more.

Then I remembered a little tidbit about using peanut butter to get gum out of hair. I seem to remember trying that will poor results, but I slathered the handle up with peanut butter anyway, then wiped it off with a stout paper towel.

Darned it if didn't all come right off.

I think it has something to do with the oil... WD-40 works on stickers on painted surfaces.

It's the oil. Oil breaks down rubber, which is why my zil elastic loses its stretch, and latex clothing has to be washed/wiped after every use.

Ditto as the rest -- I used baby oil to take off all the stickers on the baby stuff when I had to label everything with the current date that I took for Ada to daycare.

Hooray!

i have something sticky in my hair (ugh) and am at the point of deciding whether to use goo gone, or peanut butter.

I might try the peanut butter first!

Goo gone is made on a base of orange oil, if that helps. Lord knows what else is in there, of course.
