Oh man!!!

I've dealt with several deaths and closecalls in "the family" recently and in recent years, and at the moment that just isn't funny!

For Better or For Worse really hasn't been 'funny' for a while, if ever. Sunday one-off tend to be, but even those are rather wry.

I'd say you are beautiful when you're angry, but the reality is so much different...

Instead, you can look downright hilarious.

I've seen Keri feverish, sick, drunk, delirious, terrified, overjoyed, boiling mad. But up to now, I have never seen her red-faced with hysteria.

Now, who could this be?

For one thing, I am trying to remember the last time I was terrified. Maybe in the car.

And delirious was... when I was three? O.o

I have been reading "For Better or Worse" for at least 15 years and have almost always enjoyed it. Even when Farley died.

IMO,it's not strictly a "comic" strip, like 'Zits' or '9 Chickweed Lane'. I see it as more of a slice of real life that gently points out the humor all around us. Sometimes the writing is funny, sometimes it's wry, sometimes it's thought-provoking, and sometimes it is really poignant, but the best thing is that it is always entertaining. Everything that happens in that strip "feels" right, and seems like it could happen next door.

We are watching a family as they laugh, cry, triumph over adversity, and deal with the things that we all must: birth, death, falling in love, and falling out of friendship. These changes are real for everyone, but we get to see the extended Patterson family deal with them all with the grace and wit that we wish we had in real life.

I'll be sorry to see Grandpa go, but we already saw Grandma die a few years ago. Jim greived, then kept on with his life and found love again. As far as humans go -- real or cartoon -- he's had a good life.

Having dealt with the death of both my parents, it happens just like the strip showed today: when you least expect or want it. But then, everything is that way -- good, bad, or indifferent.

And that, my fannish family, is life.
