Anybody got some ideas? I am looking for Sophie's hat from Howl's Moving Castle. You'all can thank verminiusrex for this.

I can decorate it, but I need the basic hat.

The flat, round crown and short brim are stumping me. Most hats I have seen have square or high, round crowns and ginormous brims.

I came to say the same thing everyone else said! *laughs*

But I brought a link!

Scroll to the bottom to the 20 dollar or 10 dollar straw version...I think those would work.

I'd call it a cloche. I could teach you to felt your own. You buy wool roving at the yarn barn and a hat shaper like this:

Then we take a couple hours a saturday and soap up hats while watching tv. It might be a fun KCCG meetup :D

If you do this make sure to invite Ruth - she loves Cloche hats.

That sounds like fun! And her hat is flexible (like a cloche), so I don't think a pith helmet is quite it, although the shape is about right.

It definitely does not look like a cloche to me. Cloches are more bell shaped and the brims fit closer to the head. Right?

Of course, cloches are cuter (to me) but I think it's more pith-like than cloche.

It looks to me like the same style as an early cloche from the late teens and very early 1920's, before bobbed hair came in and the hats got really helmet-like and tight on the head. They had a shallower crown than the mid-to-late 1920's cloche, and the brim varied in width but was usually the same dimension all around. The simple basic shape of the hat was often obscured with flowers, fabric, or feathers. I've seen similarly-shaped straw ones sold as gardening hats.
