My college roommate recently got married and more recently had a baby.

I may never have know about the baby, because the announcement came from a complete stranger (almost got deleted unread as spam) and started out 'Dear Friends and Family of *some strange guys name*'

I had to read a ways down to find out what possible link I had with these strange people, because the writer of the email didn't mention my college roommate's name until well into the baby shower announcement.

And, whoever she is (she doesn't have the same last name as my college roomies new husband), she CONTINUES to address the emails to the husband's or the child's 'friends and family'.

Should I be miffed for my roomie's sake?

Don't waste your time.

Either: She chose to marry into a family like that, and breed with a member. It's unlikely that she wasn't aware of their tendencies. And if she was, well, shame on her for not getting to know the family before joining it.

Or: This email is from an annoying relative who is already on ex-roomie's bad side and is doing this to further irritate her, at a time when she's particularly vulnerable. Adding your negative feelings only feeds the psychic vampire.

I'd advise being happy for your friend and putting your energy towards that instead.

My initial response was "Yes, that's really freaking annoying."

Then I read this, and I saw that there was in fact a much more sensible way than mine to view it. I second the recommendation to be happy for your friend instead.

Much love,
Rowan

Like you, I had that instant response of "what a jerk!" but dwelling on it really doesn't do anybody any good.

I've spent the last year working on eliminating negative energy from myself. Not to say I don't vent and snark with the best of them, but I do my best to avoid dwelling there, you know?

I was with all of the above in thinking "yes, be annoyed" but then, yeah there are better ways to think of this, so be happy.

After reviewing the emails, I think ladyniniane's explanation makes a great deal of sense. I still don't know who the sender is, but I think ladyniniane is right that it's a canned email, and it's being sent out with the address of whoever paid for it or somesuch 'spoofed' into the 'sent by' field.

Now THAT is ringing true for me. Although the email name doesn't quite fit. The person 'signing' it signs it 'Laura Lastname' but the email is 'ErosLastname'. Hmmmm.

The baby IS very cute, though.

Oh my god, I've never heard of such a thing!

Cripes. We've got automated everything these days. Pretty soon the birthing process (not to mention conception) are going to be automated. Geez.
