I am three for three picking good mangoes from the super market. Yay!

But those peaches were a cheat. They smell like peaches, but they are crunchy and sour.

It's my firm belief that THIS is why we don't eat enough fresh fruit: If all you really know is super market fruit, then you are used to fruit being tasteless and sour and why eat that?

I think last year I suggested you buy your peaches only from the fruit and vegetable stand in front of Sear's (or during the short time they have them at the downtown Farmer's Market). I stand by that recommendation.

I did try those. :( They weren't much better, actually. Maybe my timing was just bad, or something.

Really? Wow. I've never gotten bad peaches from them. Huh.

I got a couple nice ones right before ConQuest, so I know they're out there.

Even with farmer's market fruit, sometimes you get nothing but hard little nuggets. I think the problem is that there is almost nothing available any more in the way of fresh fruit that is 'trustworthy' (able to be properly judged for ripeness and picked at the appropriate time on a consistent basis).

I've almost given up on buying peaches - I do better with nectarines, as a rule. And I think there is another reason for that - to my knowledge, nectarines have not been subjected to the 'varietal' stresses that modern peaches have. When you go to the store or the market to buy nectarines, you buy nectarines - period; when you go to buy peaches, you must first decide on what color and other oddities that do not seem to exist in the nectarine world.

How I long for blackberries and sandhill plums growing everywhere. Well, sandhill plums are best made into jam. But still--to just pick them and make it.
